Real Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia) on trellises
Vanilla is a climbing orchid species, whose liana-like stalks climb up trees, bushes or any climbing post you’ll give them. The up to 3 cm thick lianas if Vanilla planifolia grow numerous smooth dark green alternating leaves, out of whose axils inflorescences will develop with 10-15 pale yellow orchisflowers.
After pollination these will produce 10-25cm long capsules. If they ripen, they burst open lengthwise and spread many seeds, wich are only 0,3-0,5mm in size. When they are cultivated as indoorplants, the stalks need to be cut regularly, to prevent the vanilla from growing rampant.
A Vanilla plant needs at least 4 years to bear fruit for the first time.
